Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia, the only child of William Mebarak Chadid — a writer of Lebanese descent — and Nidia Ripoll Torrado, a Colombian mother of Catalan and Italian ancestry. The bilingual and multicultural household shaped both the Arabic-melodic flourishes that have run through her music from the beginning and the easy code-switching between Spanish and English that became commercial trademarks. She was writing poetry by four, performing belly-dance routines at Lebanese family gatherings by the same age, and singing in school talent showcases by primary school. Local TV appearances on Barranquilla stations through her early teens led to a contract with Sony Music Colombia at thirteen. The first two albums — Magia (1991) and Peligro (1993) — sold modestly and the label considered her career stalled.
