About Rema

Divine Ikubor was born May 1, 2000 in Benin City, the capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria, the youngest of four children in a household that lost his father early and his elder brother shortly after — losses that recur openly across his catalogue as a thematic spine and that shape the way he writes about family, faith, and the cost of survival. He grew up in the Benin City suburb of Egor, attended Avillon Royal Academy in the city, and learned to sing and rap in church and in school competitions through his teenage years.

He moved to Ghana briefly before returning to Nigeria, and in 2018 posted a freestyle over D'Prince's track Gucci Gang to Instagram. D'Prince — the Mavin Records co-founder and the brother of Don Jazzy — saw the clip, flew Rema to Lagos for an audition, and signed him to the Mavin-backed imprint Jonzing World in early 2019.
