Eilleen Regina Edwards was born in Windsor, Ontario in August 1965 and raised in Timmins, a nickel-mining town in northern Ontario where she started singing in local clubs as a child to help support her family. After the death of her mother and stepfather in a 1987 car accident she took over raising her younger siblings, working a resort gig at Deerhurst in Huntsville for several years before signing with Mercury Nashville in 1992. They married in late 1993 and immediately started writing together. The Woman in Me (1995) sold more than twelve million copies in the United States alone, and Come On Over (1997) blew past it: more than forty million copies sold worldwide, a chart-defining run on country and pop radio at the same time, and four Grammy wins across two cycles. Up! followed in 2002 in three colour-coded versions — red country, green pop, blue international — and shipped twenty million more. After Up! she effectively disappeared from touring for the better part of a decade, treating a Lyme-disease-related vocal cord condition called dysphonia and rebuilding her voice through surgery and therapy.
