Sonu Nigam was born on July 30, 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana into a household of working musicians — his father Agam Kumar Nigam and his mother Shobha Nigam were both performing artists, and Sonu made his first stage appearance at age four singing Mohammed Rafi's Kya Hua Tera Vaada alongside his father. He moved to Bombay in his late teens, made his Bollywood debut on the 1990 film Janam, and broke through with T-Series' 1992 Mohammed Rafi tribute cassette Rafi Ki Yaadein, which led to his work as the singing voice of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and his 1995 crossover with Bewafa Sanam. The 1997 non-film album Deewana sold in multi-platinum territory and reset what a Hindi non-film record could do commercially.
