Everything you should know before you book
Cape Point sits at the tip of the Cape Peninsula inside Table Mountain National Park, where the Cape of Good Hope marks the south-western corner of Africa. The drive there — over Chapman's Peak with the Atlantic dropping away below — is as good as the destination. The funicular or a steep walk takes you to the old lighthouse and its cliff views over the meeting of two cold currents.
Boulders Beach is the other half of the day. A short boardwalk leads to a resident colony of African penguins you can watch from a few metres away — one of the few places on earth you can do this. Full-day peninsula tours bundle Cape Point, the Cape of Good Hope, and Boulders into one loop, usually with stops at Hout Bay and Simon's Town.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see penguins at Boulders Beach year-round?
Yes — the African penguin colony is resident all year. You'll see the most birds and chicks in the warmer months, but they're there in every season.
Is Cape Point the southernmost point of Africa?
No — that's Cape Agulhas, further east. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope mark the south-western tip and the famous meeting of currents, but not the geographic southern point.
Do I take the funicular at Cape Point?
The Flying Dutchman funicular saves a steep climb to the upper lighthouse. You can also walk it in about 15–20 minutes if you're fit and the wind allows.
