Chicago weekends start earlier than visitors expect. Friday after-work patios in River North and the West Loop fill up by 5 pm, and the first comedy and theater curtains go up around 7.

Most arena shows at the United Center start between 7:30 and 8, with concert venues like the Chicago Theatre, the Aragon, and the Salt Shed typically running doors at 7 and headliners around 9. Saturdays are the heaviest night of the week — expect every major venue booked, often with multiple shows in the same building.

Sundays skew toward matinees, Cubs and White Sox day games, brunch shows along Randolph Street, and the early-evening Second City mainstage. Wicker Park and Logan Square run the indie live-music weekend.

Subterranean, Empty Bottle, Beat Kitchen, and Sleeping Village all book Friday and Saturday lineups that move fast, and the Blue Line and Milwaukee Avenue make it easy to bar-hop between rooms on foot. Up in Wrigleyville, game nights and concert nights at Wrigley Field push the pre- and post-show crowd into Murphy's, Sluggers, and the Cubby Bear within sight of the marquee.

The Metro on Clark and GMan Tavern across the street keep a constant rotation of indie, punk, and rock shows year-round. Free outdoor events run on a strong seasonal cycle.

Millennium Park programs free concerts at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion most summer Mondays and Thursdays, the Chicago Blues, Jazz, and Gospel Festivals all run free in Grant Park, and the lakefront from Navy Pier down to 31st Street Beach is full of free programming on weekends from June through Labor Day. Winter pivots to ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo, Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza, and the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival in November.
