Everything you should know before you book
Topkapi Palace was the seat of the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years — courtyards, the Imperial Treasury with the Topkapi Dagger and Spoonmaker's Diamond, the sacred relics, and the separately ticketed Harem. Dolmabahçe, built later on the waterfront, is the European-style counterpoint: crystal staircases, a four-tonne chandelier, and Atatürk's clocks stopped at his hour of death.
Add the Harem at Topkapi and go early — it's the part most people regret skipping. Topkapi's standard ticket does not include the Harem, where the most ornate tilework is. Dolmabahçe is visited only by guided tour and caps daily numbers, so a pre-booked slot is essential in peak season.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Harem included in the Topkapi ticket?
No — the Harem is a separate ticket on top of the main palace entry. Many guided tours bundle it in, and it holds the palace's most spectacular tilework, so it's worth adding.
Topkapi or Dolmabahçe — which palace is better?
Topkapi for Ottoman history, the Treasury, and the Bosphorus views from its terraces; Dolmabahçe for European-style opulence and Atatürk's apartments. With time for one, first-timers usually choose Topkapi.
Can I visit Dolmabahçe on my own?
Dolmabahçe is seen only on a guided tour and limits daily visitors, so booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially in summer.
