About Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine

Everything you should know before you book

The Colosseum is the single most-visited paid attraction in Italy — 7.5 million visitors a year, with peak summer queues running 90+ minutes for walk-ups. Everyone visiting Rome books this in advance, which means the real decision isn't "should I get a ticket" but "which tier?" There are five tiers and the price gap between them ($21 to $89) is mostly about what you can physically access.

Standard ticket ($21+) gets you Level 1 + Level 2 viewing platforms, plus the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill complex across the road (one ticket covers all three sites). Arena Floor access ($45+) puts you on the same gladiatorial ground as Maximus — the wooden floor over the original underground hypogeum is a 2024-rebuilt platform that's the closest you'll get to a 1st-century gladiator's perspective. Underground (hypogeum) ($65+) adds the network of tunnels and animal cages beneath the floor — guided tour only, English departures every 30 minutes. VIP Belvedere ($89+) opens the upper tiers (Levels 3–5) usually closed to the public, plus a private guide. Combo bundles with Vatican or hop-on-hop-off save 15–25% if you're doing multiple Rome highlights.

Practical notes: the ticket is timed-entry — pick a 30-minute slot at booking and arrive 15 minutes early for security. Standard tickets are valid 24 hours from the chosen entry time, so you can do Colosseum at 10am and Roman Forum at 2pm with one ticket. Best time of day: first slot (8:30am) for the shortest queue and softest light; sunset slots are gorgeous but the Forum closes 1 hour before the Colosseum, so a 4pm visit wraps with the Forum just before its 5–6pm close.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, especially April–October. Walk-up tickets sell out by 11am most days, and the on-site queue is 60–90 minutes even when tickets are available. Pre-booking through HelloTickets is the standard for ~95% of visitors.

Is the arena floor access worth the extra $24?

Yes for first-time visitors. The wooden arena floor at the level the gladiators fought on is genuinely cinematic — and it's a separate physical level from the standard ticket. Skip it only if you're returning visitors or pure history buffs more interested in the Forum.

What's the difference between Arena Floor and Underground?

Arena Floor is the wooden platform inside the Colosseum at ground level. Underground (hypogeum) is the labyrinth of tunnels beneath that floor where animals and gladiators were held. Underground requires a guided tour (English departures every 30 min); Arena Floor is self-guided once inside.

Are the Forum and Palatine included?

Yes — every Colosseum ticket on this page includes the Roman Forum + Palatine Hill across the street. They're treated as one complex (the SUPER ticket). You enter through separate gates but the same QR code works at all three.

Can I bring a backpack inside?

Small bags only (under 30L). Larger backpacks must be left in the airport-style left-luggage at the gate (10 min queue + €4 fee). Tripods aren't allowed in the arena; phone tripods and selfie sticks are fine.
