About Wizkid

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun grew up in Surulere on the Lagos mainland, the youngest of his father's twelve children and the only child of his mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, a Christian who raised him in the church even as his father practiced Islam. He started singing in the children's choir at age five, formed a Glorious Five children's group with his older brothers, and recorded his first songs at age eleven as Lil Prinz, in a small home studio set up by an older cousin who taught him to write to a beat. He attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School and later studied at Lead City University in Ibadan and then the University of Lagos, dropping out as the music began to take off. He linked with the producer OJB Jezreel as a teenager, then with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment around 2009, and rebranded from Lil Prinz to Wizkid as the project matured. Holla at Your Boy, the EME-released debut single in 2010, lit up Nigerian radio. Tease Me/Bad Guys and Don't Dull followed inside the year and put him on every Lagos playlist. Superstar, the full debut album, dropped in 2011 and locked him in as the leading edge of the new generation alongside Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage. The 2012 hit Pakurumo, the Banky W co-led EME Volume 1 contributions, and the Drake co-sign on One Dance in 2016 lifted him into the global conversation; the One Dance run, ten weeks at number one on the Hot 100 and the most-streamed song on Spotify that year, was the inflection point. Made in Lagos in late 2020 was the artistic and commercial peak. Essence with Tems opened slowly and then detonated across mid-2021 globally; the Justin Bieber remix accelerated the Hot 100 climb and pushed the song to number nine — the first Nigerian-recorded song ever to crack the top ten. Mood with Buju and Smile with H.E.R. anchored the album alongside Ginger with Burna Boy and the Damian Marley feature Blessed. More Love, Less Ego in late 2022 leaned cooler and more introspective; Bad to Me, the single released ahead of it in mid-2023, sat at number one across multiple African markets for months. Morayo in late 2024, named after his late mother Jane Dolapo who passed in 2023, carried a heavier emotional weight and folded amapiano-leaning production into the established Afrobeats core. He is the father of multiple children and a noted style figure whose Lagos-and-London wardrobe has appeared on the cover of GQ Africa and inside Vogue's fashion week coverage in Paris and Milan.
