Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun grew up in Surulere on the Lagos mainland, the youngest of his father's twelve children and the only child of his mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, a Christian who raised him in the church even as his father practiced Islam. He started singing in the children's choir at age five, formed a Glorious Five children's group with his older brothers, and recorded his first songs at age eleven as Lil Prinz, in a small home studio set up by an older cousin who taught him to write to a beat. He linked with the producer OJB Jezreel as a teenager, then with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment around 2009, and rebranded from Lil Prinz to Wizkid as the project matured.
