Inside Quebec City

Quebec City is the francophone heart of Canada and the events capital of the province outside Montreal — a 540,000-person UNESCO World Heritage city wrapped around the Saint Lawrence River, with an entertainment calendar that runs harder in summer than almost anywhere in North America. The events identity here is built around four anchors: a modern downtown arena, a 19th-century street-festival fabric, a winter Carnival that defines the city internationally, and a 10-day summer megafestival that turns the Plains of Abraham into one of the largest outdoor concert series on the continent. Vidéotron Centre on Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel in the Sainte-Foy/Limoilou-adjacent district is the 18,000-seat arena built in 2015 — host to QMJHL Remparts hockey, arena concerts, family shows and combat sports through the calendar. Festival d'été de Québec, every July, draws upwards of one million attendees over 11 days across multiple stages at the Plains of Abraham, the Place George-V parade ground and Imperial Bell in Saint-Roch, with a single pass ($100ish range) covering every show including arena-headliner tier acts. Le Carnaval de Québec in late January and February — built around Bonhomme, the ice castle, the canoe race on the frozen Saint Lawrence and Saint-Roch parties — is the world's largest winter carnival. Place Jacques-Cartier in Vieux-Québec hosts free concerts and the Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France period costume festival in early August. Add in Imperial Bell, the Capitole de Québec for cabaret, Théâtre Petit Champlain, and the Grand Théâtre de Québec for symphony, ballet and Broadway, and the calendar is genuinely full year-round.

What's happening in Quebec City this week

A typical week in Quebec City starts quiet on Monday and builds toward a packed Thursday-through-Sunday. Mondays and Tuesdays lean toward open-mic and singer-songwriter nights at Saint-Roch bars like Le Cercle and Le Pantoum, plus weeknight Remparts QMJHL hockey at Vidéotron Centre through the September-to-March season. Wednesdays bring residency nights at Imperial Bell on Saint-Joseph Est and weekly classical programming at the Grand Théâtre de Québec on Boulevard René-Lévesque Est. Thursday tips the city into weekend mode — the Capitole de Québec on Place D'Youville opens its Broadway, cabaret and music-revue runs; the Théâtre Petit Champlain in the Vieux-Québec lower town stages francophone theatre and chansonnier shows; and the Saint-Roch bar scene fills up. Friday brings the biggest bookings: arena concerts at Vidéotron Centre, club shows at Imperial Bell and Le Cercle, comedy in French at Théâtre du Petit Champlain and the Capitole, plus the Place Jacques-Cartier free outdoor concert series in summer. Saturday adds afternoon programming on the Plains of Abraham, Marché du Vieux-Port browsing, and Remparts matinees. Sundays close the week with classical concerts at the Grand Théâtre, family theatre at the Théâtre Jeunesse and afternoon street performances in the Vieux-Québec.

Things to do in Quebec City this weekend

A standard Quebec City weekend starts with the Vieux-Québec. Friday night, the lower town's Quartier Petit Champlain and Place-Royale fill with street performers, restaurant patios spill onto cobblestone streets, and Théâtre du Petit Champlain runs francophone music and theatre in the 350-seat hall. The upper town's Capitole de Québec on Place D'Youville handles the bigger Friday-night bookings — Broadway tours, music revues, comedy specials. On nights with a Vidéotron Centre arena concert, head out to Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel early since traffic in and out builds fast on the autoroute Robert-Bourassa. Saturday afternoon is a Plains of Abraham day — joggers, picnickers, the Musée des Beaux-Arts du Québec, and through summer the free afternoon concerts and family programming. Saturday night swings back to Saint-Roch for the indie-music scene on rue Saint-Joseph: Imperial Bell, Le Cercle, Le Pantoum, plus the bar circuit along the strip. Sunday is the slowest day on the city's calendar but still reliable for brunch on Avenue Cartier in the Montcalm neighbourhood, an afternoon at the Grand Théâtre's classical matinee, or a walk along the Promenade Samuel-De Champlain. In winter, swap outdoor afternoon plans for a Remparts QMJHL game at Vidéotron Centre.

Events in Quebec City tonight

Tonight's options in Quebec City sort by neighbourhood. The biggest pick is Vidéotron Centre on Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel if there's an arena concert, family show or Remparts game on the calendar — plan for the autoroute traffic out from downtown. The Capitole de Québec on Place D'Youville runs cabaret, music revues and Broadway-style productions most nights of the year in a 1,200-seat heritage room. The Grand Théâtre de Québec on Boulevard René-Lévesque Est handles classical, opera, ballet and dance. The indie circuit in Saint-Roch — Imperial Bell on Saint-Joseph Est, Le Cercle on Rue Saint-Joseph, Le Pantoum on Saint-Joseph Ouest — runs club shows six nights a week. The Théâtre du Petit Champlain in the lower town stages francophone music and theatre. Free tonight options: Place Jacques-Cartier outdoor concerts in summer, street performances throughout the Vieux-Québec, and the bar circuits along Saint-Joseph Est and Grande Allée Est.

Concerts in Quebec City

Quebec City's concert calendar runs on three rooms. Vidéotron Centre on Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel is the 18,000-seat arena hosting rock, country, francophone-megaheadliner, Latin and hip-hop touring concerts year-round. The Capitole de Québec on Place D'Youville is the 1,200-seat heritage cabaret room for music revues, Broadway-style productions and chansonnier shows. Imperial Bell in Saint-Roch is the 800-cap club room for indie and touring rock bookings. Le Cercle and Le Pantoum on rue Saint-Joseph round out the indie circuit. The 10-day Festival d'été de Québec in July books all of these rooms plus three outdoor stages on the Plains of Abraham.

Comedy shows in Quebec City

Quebec City's stand-up scene runs primarily in French at the Capitole de Québec, the Salle Albert-Rousseau in the Sainte-Foy CEGEP campus, and the Théâtre du Petit Champlain in the lower town. ComediHa! Fest in mid-July is the city's signature comedy festival, with francophone stand-up touring headliners at venues across the city for 10 days. Imperial Bell hosts touring stand-up several nights a month. English-language comedy is rarer but happens monthly at Le Cercle and at the Saint-Roch bars. The Grand Théâtre books the big arena-tour comedy specials in the 1,800-seat Salle Louis-Fréchette.

Theater in Quebec City

The Grand Théâtre de Québec on Boulevard René-Lévesque Est is the city's mainstage performing-arts complex, with the 1,800-seat Salle Louis-Fréchette for Broadway tours, ballet and opera, and the 500-seat Salle Octave-Crémazie for smaller productions. The Théâtre du Trident, the resident company, runs a fall-to-spring season of francophone theatre. The Théâtre du Petit Champlain in the lower town stages intimate francophone productions and concerts year-round. The Capitole de Québec books Broadway-style music revues and touring productions. The Salle Albert-Rousseau in Sainte-Foy and the Salle Multi at Méduse round out the year-round theatre calendar.

Sports games in Quebec City

The Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL play their home schedule at Vidéotron Centre from September through March, with weekend home games drawing the city's biggest in-arena crowds outside of concerts. The Université Laval Rouge et Or — perennial U Sports football and basketball champions — play at the PEPS pavilion on the university campus from September through November (football) and through April (basketball). The Quebec City Marathon runs in October. The Pentathlon des Neiges on the Plains of Abraham in March is a multi-sport winter event. Major-league pro sports are a three-hour drive west to Montreal.

Festivals in Quebec City

Festival d'été de Québec in early-to-mid July is the year's largest event — 11 days, more than a million attendees, headliner concerts every night on the Plains of Abraham, plus stages across the city, single pass covers everything. Le Carnaval de Québec in late January and February is the world's largest winter carnival. Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France in early August is a period-costume historical festival across the Vieux-Québec. ComediHa! Fest in mid-July puts comedy at venues citywide. The Festival International de musiques militaires in late August fills the Plains and the Citadelle. The Christmas Market in November and December takes over Place George-V.

Live music in Quebec City

Live music in Quebec City splits between ticketed concert rooms and the bar circuit. Vidéotron Centre, the Capitole, the Grand Théâtre and Imperial Bell handle the ticketed bookings. The day-to-day live-music habit lives in Saint-Roch — Le Cercle, Le Pantoum, Bar le Sacrilège, and the bar strip along rue Saint-Joseph — and along Grande Allée Est near the Plains of Abraham. The Vieux-Québec's Pub Saint-Patrick and Pub Saint-Alexandre run live music seven nights a week with no cover. Free outdoor concerts at Place Jacques-Cartier and on the Plains of Abraham fill the summer calendar.

Top neighborhoods

Vieux-Québec

Vieux-Québec is the UNESCO World Heritage walled old city and the touristic heart of the events calendar — cobblestone streets, the Château Frontenac silhouette, and a year-round flow of street performers, concerts and festivals. Place Jacques-Cartier in the upper town hosts free outdoor concerts most summer nights and the Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France in early August. The Quartier Petit Champlain in the lower town packs Théâtre du Petit Champlain, restaurant patios and street music into a few blocks. The Citadelle de Québec hosts the Festival International de musiques militaires in late August. Pub Saint-Patrick and Pub Saint-Alexandre run live music seven nights a week.

Saint-Roch

Saint-Roch is Quebec City's hip downtown neighbourhood — a former industrial district along rue Saint-Joseph that's become the city's indie-music heart. Imperial Bell on Saint-Joseph Est is the 800-cap club venue for touring rock and indie bookings. Le Cercle on Rue Saint-Joseph and Le Pantoum on Saint-Joseph Ouest round out the indie circuit. Bar le Sacrilège, Le Knock-Out and the bar strip up and down Saint-Joseph run no-cover live music most nights. The neighbourhood fills up during Festival d'été de Québec, when several stages run nightly in Saint-Roch. The Méduse arts complex on Côte d'Abraham anchors the neighbourhood's visual-arts and dance programming.

Limoilou

Limoilou is the east-end residential and indie-arts neighbourhood across the Saint-Charles River from Saint-Roch, with the 3e Avenue and 4e Avenue strips as its main commercial arteries. The scene leans community-led: small cafés with acoustic nights, the Bistro Cervo, Tato Tao and a steady calendar of pop-up gallery openings and free outdoor concerts in the neighbourhood parks. Parc Cartier-Brébeuf hosts community events through the summer. Limoilou is also the closest residential district to Vidéotron Centre — many event-goers eat in the neighbourhood before walking or busing the 10-15 minutes north to the arena.

Sainte-Foy

Sainte-Foy is the western suburb-turned-borough that anchors the city's institutional events calendar. The Vidéotron Centre sits just north of Sainte-Foy on Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel — a 10-15 minute drive from downtown — making the neighbourhood the closest residential dinner-and-event destination. The Salle Albert-Rousseau in the Cégep de Sainte-Foy is the city's busy second-tier concert hall, hosting touring chansonniers, comedians and family shows year-round. Place Sainte-Foy and Place Laurier shopping centres anchor pre-event dinner along the Boulevard Laurier corridor. Université Laval's PEPS pavilion is the home of Rouge et Or sports.

What's on by month

January

Le Carnaval de Québec opens in late January and runs into mid-February — the world's largest winter carnival, built around Bonhomme, the ice castle on Place du Parlement, the night parades through Saint-Roch and the Grande Allée, and Carnival-themed bar parties citywide. Vidéotron Centre hosts Remparts hockey and indoor arena concerts.

February

Carnaval continues through the first two weeks. The canoe race across the frozen Saint Lawrence runs on Carnaval's first Sunday. Le Pentathlon des Neiges on the Plains of Abraham runs late February or early March. The Grand Théâtre's winter opera and ballet season is in full swing. Salle Albert-Rousseau and the Capitole run their winter cabaret seasons.

March-April

Remparts QMJHL playoffs run through March and into April. The Quebec Winter Festival of mid-March wraps up the cold-weather calendar. Spring restaurant week runs across Vieux-Québec and Saint-Roch. The Grand Théâtre's spring symphony and dance seasons open. Université Laval Rouge et Or basketball playoffs fill the PEPS pavilion on weekend nights. The Salle Albert-Rousseau's spring touring season brings francophone music and comedy to Sainte-Foy.

May-June

Festival OFF runs in late June ahead of the FEQ. The Place Jacques-Cartier outdoor concert series begins on Saint-Jean weekend. La Fête Nationale du Québec on June 24 fills the Plains of Abraham with a free outdoor concert headlined by Quebec's biggest francophone stars. The summer street-performer circuit takes over the Vieux-Québec. The Quebec City Marathon's spring half-marathon and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec road race round out the late-spring calendar.

July

Festival d'été de Québec runs 11 days in early-to-mid July — the year's biggest event, with more than a million attendees and headliner concerts every night on the Plains of Abraham. ComediHa! Fest overlaps with francophone stand-up at venues citywide. The Grands Feux Loto-Québec fireworks competition runs Wednesday and Saturday nights at the Chute-Montmorency through July and August.

August

Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France in early August takes over the Vieux-Québec for a period-costume historical festival. The Festival International de musiques militaires de Québec runs at the Citadelle and the Plains in late August. The Grands Feux fireworks continue. The Plein Art Québec craft fair fills the Place George-V parade ground. Saint-Roch's outdoor concert calendar continues.

September-October

Remparts QMJHL season opens in September. Rouge et Or football fills the PEPS stadium on weekends. Le Grand Théâtre's fall opera, ballet and Broadway seasons begin. The Quebec City Marathon runs in October. Pumpkin and harvest festivals run on Île d'Orléans. The Capitole and Salle Albert-Rousseau open their fall cabaret seasons.

November-December

The Quebec City German Christmas Market — Marché de Noël allemand — takes over Place George-V from late November through December, modeled on European Christmas markets with chalets, mulled wine and food stalls. The Grand Théâtre runs its holiday Nutcracker and symphony Christmas concerts. Vidéotron Centre books its biggest pre-Christmas arena shows. New Year's Eve programming on the Plains of Abraham and at the Château Frontenac fireworks closes the calendar.
